Renfe Pulls Avlo From Madrid–Barcelona, Shifts Service to AVE on Sept. 8

The government is courting Siemens for replacement high-speed trains following reliability problems with Talgo’s S106 units.

Overview

  • Existing Avlo ticket holders will travel on AVE at the same price, while new sales move to AVE fares with the same frequencies and schedules maintained.
  • A July safety inspection found a bogie fissure on a Talgo S106 train, prompting Renfe to withdraw all five S106 units operating on the corridor.
  • Transport Minister Óscar Puente acknowledged the poor performance of the S106 fleet and will visit Siemens in Germany next week to explore alternative rolling stock.
  • Renfe intends to enforce €116 million in contractual penalties on Talgo for delayed Avril deliveries, as infrastructure wear and speed reductions on the route are cited as compounding factors.
  • With Renfe exiting the low-cost offering on this corridor, Ouigo is positioned as the main beneficiary, with Iryo also likely to capture price-sensitive demand.
