Renewable Energy Hits Record 63.4% of Germany’s Electricity in Q3 2024

Wind and solar power led the way, while coal and gas usage declined significantly, highlighting the impact of favorable weather and increased solar capacity.

  • Renewable energy sources accounted for 63.4% of Germany's electricity generation in Q3 2024, up from 60.6% in the same period last year.
  • Wind power remained the largest contributor at 24.7%, while solar energy saw the highest growth, increasing by 13.5% to reach 23.8%.
  • The surge in renewable energy was attributed to unusually sunny and windy conditions, as well as a 20% increase in installed solar capacity compared to the previous year.
  • Electricity generated from coal dropped by 6% to 21.4%, and gas-powered electricity fell by nearly 9% to 11.4%, reflecting a shift away from fossil fuels.
  • Germany's electricity imports rose by 2.2%, with exports increasing by 19%, though concerns remain about reliance on imported nuclear power from neighboring countries.
