Remains Recovered Seven Months After Alaska Heli-Ski Avalanche as Two Remain Missing

Volunteers reached the remote slide zone by helicopter after months of avalanche danger kept teams away.

Overview

  • State officials said volunteers recovered one skier's remains Friday in the West Fork of Twentymile River slide area near Girdwood.
  • The body was found in a log jam beneath the avalanche path and was taken to the State Medical Examiner for identification, with the name not yet released.
  • The three men were identified as David Linder, 39, Charles Eppard, 39, and Jeremy Leif, 38; two remain missing.
  • Hazardous conditions and estimated burial depths of 40 to 100 feet prevented recovery teams from safely entering the steep terrain for months after the March 4 slide.
  • Alaska Mountain Rescue Group and the Girdwood Volunteer Fire Department say additional air and ground operations are planned as conditions permit.
