Remains of Steven MacKrell Found in Boca Raton Pond a Decade After Disappearance

Authorities continue investigating how his car entered the water, requesting tips about his movements on July 30, 2015.

Overview

  • The Palm Beach County Medical Examiner used dental records to confirm the remains are MacKrell’s after his car was found submerged on Oct. 2 in a Boca Raton pond.
  • Sunshine State Sonar located the white 2013 Ford Fusion at 900 Peninsula Corporate Circle near I‑95, and Boca Raton police recovered the vehicle with skeletal remains inside.
  • MacKrell, 25, was last seen leaving downtown Fort Lauderdale around 1:30 a.m. and later at a Pompano Beach Valero, where surveillance showed an apparent dispute.
  • Fort Lauderdale police say the circumstances of how the car entered the water are unresolved, and they ask anyone with information to call 954-828-6677 or Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
  • The discovery follows years of searches by police across nearly 200 water bodies and a sustained effort by the private sonar team, offering long-awaited closure to the family.
