Overview

  • The remains of Morgan Harris, a 39-year-old Indigenous woman, were identified at the Prairie Green Landfill near Winnipeg, Manitoba.
  • The search, which began in December 2024, is part of a $40 million joint effort by the provincial and federal governments to recover the remains of Harris and Marcedes Myran, both victims of convicted murderer Jeremy Skibicki.
  • A second set of human remains was also discovered during the search, but authorities have not yet confirmed the identity.
  • Jeremy Skibicki was convicted of first-degree murder in 2024 for the killings of four Indigenous women, including Harris, Myran, Rebecca Contois, and an unidentified woman named Mashkode Bizhiki’ikwe (Buffalo Woman) by Indigenous leaders.
  • Advocates and families of the victims view the identification as a step forward in their years-long fight for justice and recognition of the violence faced by Indigenous women in Canada.
