Remains of Dr. Nicola Ivaldo Found on Monviso’s North Face After Drone Survey

Recovery teams have begun judicial procedures to formally identify Ivaldo after his remains were located in the Canale Perotti.

Overview

  • The remains of 66-year-old Dr. Nicola Ivaldo were discovered on July 31 at about 3,150 meters in the Canale Perotti on Monviso’s north face.
  • A Prefettura di Cuneo–coordinated mission used Soccorso Alpino e Speleologico Piemontese drones and cell-tower tracking to scan 183 hectares and flag three target sites.
  • Pilots captured 2,600 high-resolution images processed through specialized photogrammetry software that identified the location of Ivaldo’s equipment and remains.
  • A Vigili del Fuoco helicopter deployed Soccorso Alpino and Guardia di Finanza personnel to recover the body and initiate judicial police operations.
  • Ivaldo, who went missing during a solo climb in mid-September 2024, had directed the shoulder and elbow unit at Clinica Habilita Villa Igea since 2019.
