• A Stearns-Benton County dive team recovered the vehicle on Aug. 13 after a fisherman reported an anomaly on his sonar near Riverside Avenue North in Sartell.
• Investigators noted the 1963 Buick Electra was intact but heavily silted and deteriorated when it was lifted from the river and brought to Sartell Police Department for processing.
• Authorities confirmed early Aug. 14 that human remains were discovered inside the sedan and arranged transport to the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office.
• The Sheriff’s Office matched the car’s vehicle identification number to Roy George Benn, a Sauk Rapids man who disappeared on Sept. 25, 1967.
• Jurisdiction over the case has been transferred to the Benton County Sheriff’s Office as investigators pursue possible resolution of the decades-old missing-person investigation.
