Reliance Foundation to Develop 130-Acre Coastal Road Gardens in Mumbai

The CSR-led partnership awaits a final BMC agreement after a cost-driven tender.

Overview

  • Reliance announced at its AGM that it will design, develop and care for 53 hectares of reclaimed land as the Coastal Road Gardens, featuring walkways, cycling tracks and plazas.
  • RIL will take over operation and maintenance of the recently opened 5.5 km Coastal Road promenade.
  • A senior BMC Coastal Road official said the agreement is being finalized and detailed designs will be submitted after signing, with completion expected in at least 1.5 years.
  • The BMC invited private participation for 30-year development and maintenance, extendable by another 30 years, after its estimate rose to about ₹400 crore.
  • RIL was the only firm meeting the EoI criteria, and any commercial activity in the open spaces will require permission from the Supreme Court.
