Rekha Receives Red Sea Honouree Award as Restored Umrao Jaan Premieres in Jeddah

The Treasures program is using a new 4K restoration to reintroduce Muzaffar Ali’s 1981 classic to international audiences.

Overview

  • The Red Sea International Film Festival hosted the international premiere of the restored 4K Umrao Jaan, where Rekha was honoured on stage with sustained applause.
  • In a brief address, Rekha said she is “not much of a talker,” urged people to live by example, and reflected on the power of silence and love in her work.
  • Director Muzaffar Ali attended the screening and called the film a journey into a “lost culture,” praising Rekha for immortalising the title role.
  • Making a rare public appearance, Rekha arrived in an ivory-and-gold saree with traditional jewellery, drawing strong attention from attendees and media.
  • The film returned to Indian theatres on June 27 in a 4K restoration with a companion coffee-table book, and the Red Sea festival runs December 4–13.
