Reintroduced Lynx Uraclio Roams Freely in Madrid as Conservation Efforts Expand

After two weeks of monitored movements, Madrid authorities plan to add El Pardo to the lynx’s reintroduction zone

Overview

  • Uraclio, a two-year-old male born in Montes de Toledo and released in Cuenca this February, has been detected in Villalbilla, Corpa, Los Santos de la Humosa and Anchuelo.
  • Technicians from the Community of Madrid’s Biodiversity Directorate and Forest Rangers report that Uraclio is in perfect health and has ranged over a broad area during his dispersal phase.
  • The Madrid Environment Ministry is finalizing an agreement with Patrimonio Nacional to incorporate the 453-hectare El Pardo estate and adjacent public lands into the region’s lynx reintroduction program to reduce traffic risks.
  • Castilla-La Mancha remains the national stronghold for Iberian lynx recovery, hosting 942 individuals—46 percent of Spain’s total—including 468 in Montes de Toledo and 305 in Sierra Morena Oriental.
  • Separately, video footage from Argés in Toledo shows another lynx navigating an urbanization and resting on a private porch, underscoring the species’ ongoing natural expansion into human landscapes.
