Rehabilitated Lynx ‘Baron’ Found Dead in Thuringia After Suspected Train Hit

BUND Thüringen says the likely collision will not alter the outlook for the small monitored lynx population.

Overview

  • Baron’s carcass was discovered Tuesday beside railway tracks between Meiningen and Themar, according to BUND Thüringen.
  • GPS recordings indicate he was struck by a train and later died in adjacent woodland.
  • The one-year-old was captured in June in severely emaciated condition, rehabilitated at the Alternativer Bärenpark Worbis, and released in late August.
  • BUND lynx expert Markus Port called the loss a sad moment and noted that Baron's story had resonated with many people.
  • The BUND project team expects no negative impact on the regional population, which it estimates at roughly 15 to 20 lynx in Thuringia.
