Regulators have paused the proposal because the existing report omits key technical upgrades, crucial inter-state water-sharing approvals, full cost assessments.

Overview

  • The Godavari River Management Board ruled that diverting 200 tmc ft under the link project alters the Polavaram scope and requires revising the 2009-approved detailed project report and seeking Advisory Committee approval.
  • The Polavaram Project Authority advised that additional diversion should await completion of the dam to its full reservoir level of 45.72 meters to secure planned irrigation and supply benefits.
  • Officials said the Right Main Canal must be upgraded to a 23,000-cusec capacity and linked to the Tadipudi canal system before any extra water can be drawn.
  • The pre-feasibility report’s cost estimate excludes infrastructure for a new 300,000-hectare ayacut and must be expanded to incorporate full canal enhancements and ayacut development costs.
  • Both GRMB and PPA emphasized compliance with the 1980 Godavari tribunal award and the 2014 Reorganisation Act, calling for inter-state consultations before the CWC reviews the proposal.
