Reform UK’s 'Doge' unit launches first audit of Kent County Council spending

The tech-led team has sought unfettered access to council contracts and records; reviews will then expand to Lancashire, subsequently covering all ten Reform UK authorities.

Overview

  • The unit, modelled on Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency, began its in-depth review at Kent County Council on June 1 under the leadership of data analytics specialist Nathaniel Fried.
  • Reform UK has demanded prompt access to all electronic and paper documents, including procurement data, audit reports, meeting minutes and whistleblowing records to examine contractual arrangements, capital expenditure and financial resilience.
  • The initiative is part of Reform’s campaign promise to eliminate waste and redirect funds to frontline services by leveraging AI, advanced data analysis and forensic auditing techniques.
  • After Kent, the 'Doge' team will turn its attention to Lancashire County Council as the second authority in its tour of the ten councils gained in May’s local elections.
  • Reform UK has indicated plans to axe final-salary pension schemes for council staff and cut spending on diversity, equality and inclusion programmes as part of its cost-saving measures.
