Overview
- Reddit began rolling out video comments on June 11 to all users in eligible communities so people can reply in short-form video inside comment threads.
- In eligible threads a video icon will appear next to image and GIF options so users can upload an existing clip or record one in the comment box.
- Videos will not autoplay, will follow users’ audio settings, and will pass through Reddit’s safety systems before appearing publicly.
- At launch the feature is confined to public, suitable-for-work communities and in many places moderators must enable it, leaving questions about moderation scale and enforcement.
- Reddit tested the tool in an alpha program — examples include a Mel C video AMA and handwriting demos — and the company says creators can use it for demos, AMAs, and visual replies but the option to repost nonoriginal clips raises reuse, copyright, and moderation concerns.
