Red Warning for Storm Goretti Triggers Phone Alerts as 100mph Winds Batter Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly

Officials are pushing emergency warnings to compatible mobiles in the red zone to direct immediate safety actions.

Overview

  • The Met Office red wind warning is in force from 16:00 to 23:00 for the Isles of Scilly and Cornwall, signalling danger to life from flying debris, building damage and very large waves.
  • The Cabinet Office sent an Emergency Alert to the Isles of Scilly at about 15:00 and planned a second for Cornwall at about 17:00, reaching roughly 500,000 devices with a 10‑second siren even on silent.
  • Gusts of 67 mph have already been recorded in Cornwall, with 80–100+ mph expected in exposed areas as the rapidly deepening “weather bomb” intensifies.
  • Network Rail will suspend all trains in Cornwall from 18:00, with Exeter–Okehampton and Exeter–Barnstaple services also halted, and no replacement road transport due to safety concerns.
  • The storm is a multi-hazard event, with an amber snow warning for parts of Wales and the Midlands where 10–30 cm of snowfall is possible overnight into Friday.
