Red Warning as Storm Goretti Batters UK With 100mph Winds, Power Cuts and Travel Disruption

Forecasters say the rapidly deepening 'weather bomb' is also driving heavy snow across central regions.

Overview

  • The Met Office issued a rare red wind warning for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly from 4pm to 11pm, and the Cabinet Office sent two Emergency Alerts to compatible phones in those areas.
  • Gusts hit 99mph at St Mary’s Airport on the Isles of Scilly, a site record, with 80–100mph forecast in exposed parts of the far southwest.
  • National Grid reported more than 47,000 properties without power in southwest England by around 9pm, with additional outages in the West Midlands and Wales.
  • Network Rail suspended all trains in Cornwall from 6pm and warned of ongoing disruption on Friday, with no replacement road transport due to hazardous conditions.
  • An amber snow warning signals 10–30cm across parts of Wales, the Midlands and the Peak District into Friday, as Goretti also drives evacuations and weather-related deaths in the Balkans and brings severe conditions to France and Germany.
