Red Sox Allow Giants to Discuss Manager Role with Jason Varitek
Former Red Sox Catcher and Current Coach Jason Varitek Considered for Giants' Managerial Vacancy After Sudden Firing of Gabe Kapler
- The Red Sox have granted the San Francisco Giants permission to talk to game planning coordinator and catching coach Jason Varitek about their managerial vacancy.
- Varitek, who spent 15 years as Boston’s catcher from 1997-2011, has been a member of Boston skipper Alex Cora's coaching staff since the 2021 season.
- The Giants fired manager Gabe Kapler with three games remaining in the regular season. He compiled a 78-81 record in 2023 and was 295-248 in four seasons with San Francisco.
- Interim manager Kai Correa finished out the season for the Giants and has already interviewed for the manager role, along with Giants coaches Mark Hallberg and Alyssa Nakken.
- While Varitek is a candidate for the Giants' managerial job, it is not known yet whether he has any interest in the role or if a formal interview has been conducted.
