Red Fort Car Blast Kills 8 as Delhi Launches Multi-Agency Terror Probe

Investigators have invoked UAPA and are examining forensic clues after early checks found no crater or shrapnel injuries.

Overview

  • A slow-moving Hyundai i20 exploded near Gate No. 1 of the Red Fort Metro Station around 6:52 pm, igniting multiple vehicles before fire crews contained the blaze within roughly 30–45 minutes.
  • At least eight people were confirmed dead and more than 20 were injured, with many taken to LNJP Hospital as officials released names of the deceased and wounded.
  • NSG, NIA, FSL and Delhi Police special units are on scene, Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed the site and briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and a high-level review meeting is set for Tuesday.
  • Police traced the car to a Haryana registration, detained a prior owner who said he had sold it, and are reconstructing its movements through CCTV and toll data as records indicate multiple ownership transfers.
  • Preliminary observations reporting no crater and few splinter wounds leave the cause unresolved, while Delhi and several states are on high alert and the US and UK have issued advisories.
