Red Flag Warning for Colorado Front Range as Downslope Winds Elevate Fire Risk
Mountain-wave warming with very dry air creates fast-spread potential through late afternoon.
Overview
- The National Weather Service has a Red Flag Warning in place until 5 p.m. Thursday for much of the Front Range and northeastern Colorado.
- The alert covers the lower foothills, the I-25 corridor and adjacent plains, and parts of Jefferson, Douglas, Boulder, Adams, Arapahoe, Weld, Larimer, Elbert and Lincoln counties.
- Forecasters cite temperatures in the 60s, relative humidity near 15 percent, sustained winds of 15 to 25 mph and gusts up to about 45 mph.
- Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning and spark-producing activities such as using power tools on dry grass, dragging chains, parking on tall vegetation or discarding cigarettes.
- Winds are expected to ease later this evening, though a weak La Niña and a western ridge will keep the region unusually warm and dry through the week.
