Red Cup Day Arrives at Starbucks as Workers Move to Strike

Starbucks says it is adding staff to keep service steady during the high-traffic giveaway.

Overview

  • On Nov. 13, customers get a free 16‑oz reusable red cup with a qualifying handcrafted holiday or fall drink while supplies last, available in stores, drive‑thrus, the Starbucks app, and via DoorDash, Grubhub and Uber Eats at participating locations in the U.S. and Canada.
  • The 2025 cup is made with 95% recycled material and features a hand‑drawn design by Starbucks designer Yvonne Chan, and customers using a reusable cup receive a 10‑cent discount and Starbucks Rewards members earn double stars on their order.
  • Starbucks Workers United says an open‑ended strike is set to begin today unless a contract is reached, with actions planned in at least 25 cities and representation at roughly 550 unionized shops out of about 10,000 U.S. locations.
  • Starbucks says it will staff up and “give away more cups than ever” to support the customer rush, and a company spokesperson said the coffee chain is disappointed by the strike plan but ready to resume talks.
  • The extent of any disruption is unclear, though one local report estimated as many as 12,000 workers could walk off the job and some stores have held practice pickets ahead of the action.
