Red Alerts in Valencia and Castellón as Torrential Rains Trigger Local Flooding

Officials link the threat to the extratropical remnants of Hurricane Gabrielle, prompting earlier ES-Alert warnings after last year’s deadly DANA.

Overview

  • AEMET maintains the highest warning in coastal and prelittoral Valencia and parts of Castellón, with forecasts up to 180 liters per square meter in 12 hours and a high risk of flash floods.
  • Overnight storms overflowed Aldaia’s La Saleta barranco and flooded streets, while municipal barriers and canalizations limited damage and averted evacuations, according to local authorities.
  • Recorded accumulations include about 85 l/m² in Ayora on Sunday night and 72 l/m² in Manises, with significant totals in Paterna, Quart de Poblet, Pedralba and other municipalities.
  • Regional and state agencies reinforced operations with doubled 112 staffing, coordinated monitoring of rivers and barrancos, and deployments involving Guardia Civil, UME and firefighters.
  • Schools and public facilities closed in multiple localities, telework was advised, and AEMET signaled further heavy rain on Monday with episode totals possibly reaching 250–300 mm in parts of Valencia.
