Red Alerts for Torrential Rain Put Valencia, Castellón and Tarragona on Emergency Footing

Lessons from last year’s deadly floods drove earlier alerts, preventative closures, plus drainage checks.

Overview

  • Spain’s meteorological agency AEMET kept red warnings in force for parts of Valencia and Castellón and issued alerts for the Tarragona coast due to prolonged, very heavy rain tied to ex‑hurricane Gabrielle.
  • Protección Civil pushed ES‑Alert messages to phones urging people to move to higher floors in flood‑prone areas and to stay away from rivers, ramblas and barrancos.
  • Regional and local authorities suspended classes, activated emergency centers, reinforced 112 staffing and advised telework, while Valencia city kept shelters open and maintained overnight patrols at critical drainage points.
  • Intense downpours produced localized flooding and rescues from Aragón to Murcia, with 112 Aragón logging 1,664 calls and 126 incidents, Zaragoza’s Huerva River overflowing, and Murcia reporting road closures and vehicle rescues after hourly totals of 40–50 l/m².
  • Many municipalities in l’Horta Sud reported controlled situations and functioning drainage after pre‑storm cleaning, though vulnerable towns such as l’Alcúdia and Algemesí kept closures and precautions in place given unresolved infrastructure repairs.
