Red Alerts for Mumbai as Maharashtra Floods Force Evacuations, Jayakwadi Opens All Gates

Large dam releases are driving evacuations across Maharashtra.

Overview

  • The IMD kept red alerts in place through September 30 for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad, with officials warning about urban flooding and landslides in coastal and ghat districts.
  • More than 11,500 people were relocated in Marathwada and at least two rain-related deaths were reported in Dharashiv, with six villages cut off and multiple relief camps operating.
  • All 27 gates of the Jayakwadi reservoir were opened, releasing about 2.26 lakh cusecs and raising Godavari levels downstream; other dams including Majalgaon, Sina Kolegaon and Ujani also increased outflows under close monitoring.
  • Mumbai logged high 24‑hour totals (Colaba 120.8 mm) and saw localized waterlogging such as a temporary Andheri subway closure, but core road and rail services largely continued as the BMC ran dewatering and control-room operations.
  • Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis reviewed district responses, directed proactive evacuations and relief supplies, and announced ₹10,000 assistance for inundated households while agencies maintained 24/7 readiness.
