Red Alerts and School Closures as Bay System Targets North Tamil Nadu and Puducherry

Forecasters expect a depression to form near the coast today, increasing the likelihood of intense rain, rough seas, strong gusts.

  • The IMD says a low over the southwest Bay of Bengal is moving west‑northwest and is likely to concentrate into a depression off the north Tamil NaduPuducherry–south Andhra coast by Wednesday afternoon, with scope for further intensification.
  • Multiple coastal and delta districts are under red alert for very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, while Chennai and several neighboring districts are on orange alert for heavy rain.
  • Educational institutions are closed today across many areas: Chennai has shut schools, several districts have shut schools and colleges, and Puducherry and Karaikal have declared holidays.
  • Persistent downpours have caused widespread waterlogging, uprooted trees and transport delays; Madurai is on flood alert as the Vaigai rises, and rough seas are reported at Marina Beach.
  • RMC forecasts coastal winds of 45–55 km/h gusting to 65 km/h and has advised fishermen to stay ashore, while administrations run control rooms, deploy disaster teams and Nellore prepares evacuations with schools shut.
