Overview
- The IMD says a low over the southwest Bay of Bengal is moving west‑northwest and is likely to concentrate into a depression off the north Tamil Nadu–Puducherry–south Andhra coast by Wednesday afternoon, with scope for further intensification.
- Multiple coastal and delta districts are under red alert for very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, while Chennai and several neighboring districts are on orange alert for heavy rain.
- Educational institutions are closed today across many areas: Chennai has shut schools, several districts have shut schools and colleges, and Puducherry and Karaikal have declared holidays.
- Persistent downpours have caused widespread waterlogging, uprooted trees and transport delays; Madurai is on flood alert as the Vaigai rises, and rough seas are reported at Marina Beach.
