Red Alert in Gujarat as IMD Warns of Very Heavy Rainfall

Near-full reservoirs are driving controlled releases with localized evacuations.

Overview

  • IMD forecasts very heavy to heavy rain over the next 24–48 hours in several districts, with a marked decrease by day three and scattered showers from day four.
  • Gujarat has recorded about 1,009 mm of rain this season, roughly 22% above normal, crossing 100% of its average by Sunday.
  • Storage at Sardar Sarovar is about 91% while 123 of 206 reservoirs are on high alert, with statewide storage near 84% of capacity.
  • Authorities opened barrage and dam gates, including 27 at Ahmedabad’s Vasna, closed the lower Sabarmati Riverfront promenade, and advised fishermen to stay ashore through September 10.
  • Since June 1, officials report 7,177 people moved to safety and 1,054 rescued, with 12 NDRF and 22 SDRF teams deployed as flooding disrupts roads and inundates neighborhoods including parts of Vadodara.
