Recovery of Sunken Yacht 'Bayesian' to Resume Off Sicily in Late June

TMC Marine confirmed that enhanced safety protocols will guide the complex wreck-lifting operation after the May diver fatality

Overview

  • The luxury yacht 'Bayesian' sank off Sicily in August 2024 during a severe storm, killing seven people including British entrepreneur Mike Lynch and his daughter.
  • TMC Marine confirmed that salvage operations will restart at the end of June 2025 following approval in Palermo.
  • Efforts were paused after a Dutch diver's death on May 9 prompted an Italian probe into possible negligence and led to stricter safety protocols.
  • Salvage engineers will first raise the stern, detach the 72-metre mast and then hoist the 56-metre hull to the surface in a technically demanding lift.
  • While the wreck contains around 18,000 litres of fuel, no environmental contamination has been detected and the sea floor is under continuous monitoring.
