Recovered Stolen Items to Feature in British Museum's 'Rediscovering Gems' Exhibition

The exhibition, marking a shift towards greater transparency, will display 10 recovered items alongside over 500 other objects, shedding light on an underappreciated art form.

  • The British Museum is set to display 10 items that were stolen from its collection and have since been recovered. The items will be part of an exhibition titled 'Rediscovering Gems', which will also feature over 500 objects not involved in the thefts.
  • The stolen items include a Roman first-century profile bust of Minerva, or Athena, in black glass with a white band, and a glass cameo with a bust of Cupid, or Eros, in three layers of brown on white on purple glass.
  • The museum announced in August that up to 2,000 objects from its storerooms were missing, stolen or damaged. To date, about 350 items have been recovered.
  • Following the thefts, a senior curator in the Greece and Rome department was dismissed, and the museum's director, Hartwig Fischer, resigned. Sir Mark Jones, former director of the Victoria and Albert Museum, was appointed as interim director.
  • The exhibition, which aims to shed light on an underappreciated and very beautiful art form, will run from February 15 to June 15, 2024.
