Record Snowfall Disrupts Moscow's Roads and Airports

Over 130,000 people mobilized for snow-clearing efforts as Siberian region reports extreme temperatures.

  • Record snowfall has hit Moscow, bringing an additional 23 centimeters (nine inches) to already high levels of snow.
  • Disruptions have been reported on roads and at three out of four Moscow airports, with 53 flights delayed and five canceled.
  • About 135,000 people and 18,000 pieces of equipment were involved in the snow-clearing effort.
  • Nearly 200 trucks got stuck in the snow over the past 24 hours, requiring assistance from road traffic workers.
  • Heavy snow and temperatures below -50 C (-58 F) were also reported in the Siberian region of Yakutia.
