Record Sanctions Hit Drogheda United Over Oriel Park Flares

The decision prompted the sports minister to restore normal engagement with the FAI.

Overview

  • An independent disciplinary committee fined Drogheda United €15,000, banned their supporters from the next four away games, and barred their fans from all fixtures at Oriel Park for the remainder of 2026.
  • The away supporters’ ban applies to trips to Sligo Rovers on 7 March, St Patrick's Athletic on 13 March, Derry City on 20 March, and Waterford on 10 April.
  • Flares thrown from the Drogheda section burned Dundalk’s newly relaid artificial surface and injured a 12-year-old, and both clubs said they will cooperate with Gardaí.
  • Drogheda accepted the sanctions, committed to covering the full cost of pitch repairs, and said it has sanctioned individuals identified in an internal review.
  • The FAI and League announced tougher prevention steps that include mandatory adequate CCTV from 2027, enhanced entry searches with pyrotechnic detection dogs, and stadium bans for offenders.
