Overview
- From March 1 to May 31, Karnataka recorded 286 mm of pre-monsoon rainfall—149 percent above its normal average—and May’s 219 mm tally was 197 percent higher than usual.
- Heavy thunderstorms and gales killed 71 people between April and May, including 48 from lightning strikes, nine from falling trees, five from house collapses, four by drowning, four in landslides and one by electrocution.
- The rains damaged 2,068 houses and killed 702 livestock with compensation already paid in 1,926 housing cases and 698 animal loss claims.
- Crop losses affected 15,378.32 hectares—11,915.66 in agricultural fields and 3,462.66 in horticulture—with compensation processing under way.
