A woman from Bethesda, Maryland was stopped from boarding a flight at Reagan National Airport on Christmas Eve with a loaded 9mm gun in her carry-on luggage.
The gun was detected by an X-ray machine at the security checkpoint and was confiscated by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police.
The woman was cited with a weapons charge and faces a fine of up to $15,000.
This incident marks the 39th gun detected at Reagan National Airport's checkpoints in 2023, setting a new record for the airport.
Nationwide, over 6,000 guns have been stopped at security checkpoints in 2023, following last year's record of 6,542 firearms.
