Record Methamphetamine Seizure in Thailand
50 million tablets seized near Myanmar border, marking Thailand's largest haul and Asia's second largest.
- Thai police have seized a record haul of 50 million methamphetamine tablets in the western province of Kanchanaburi, close to the Myanmar border.
- The seized tablets were hidden in sacks in a six-wheeler truck stopped at a joint police-military checkpoint.
- The quantity of methamphetamine tablets seized is a record for Thailand and the second largest in Asia, after a consignment of 55 million pills was discovered in Laos in October 2021.
- Myanmar has historically been the region’s main drug production area, with production increasing due to unrest since a 2021 coup.
- Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul stated that illegal drugs used to be smuggled into Thailand’s northern and northeastern provinces, but had moved to western provinces such as Kanchanaburi because of more intense surveillance and security along the old routes.
