Record-Low 54% of U.S. Adults Report Drinking as Health Concerns Grow

Warnings from WHO, the U.S. Surgeon General, federal reviews, recent studies, public-health advisories prompted Americans to reconsider moderate alcohol use

Overview

  • Gallup’s July 7–21, 2025 Consumption Habits survey found 54% of adults say they drink alcohol, the lowest level since tracking began in 1939.
  • For the first time a majority (53%) of respondents view moderate drinking as harmful to health.
  • Among current drinkers only 24% reported drinking in the prior 24 hours and 40% said it had been more than a week since their last drink, while average weekly intake fell to 2.8 drinks.
  • Declines in self-reported drinking were most pronounced among young adults, women, white adults and self-identified Republicans.
  • NIQ data show total alcohol sales remained largely flat in 2024, highlighting a disconnect between consumer behavior and industry revenue.
