Record Inflows Force Pong Dam Releases, Evacuations Ordered in Himachal and Punjab

The wettest North Indian monsoon since 2013 drove exceptional inflows into the Beas reservoir.

Overview

  • BBMB reported 9.68 BCM of water entered Pong during July–August, surpassing previous highs set in 1988 and 2023.
  • The reservoir level was around 1,393.5–1,393.7 feet on Thursday, above the danger mark after a slight rise.
  • Inflows fell to about 1.1 lakh cusecs from 2.2 lakh a day earlier, while releases ranged from a scheduled 1.10 lakh cusecs on August 28 to roughly 94,845 cusecs later in the day.
  • Authorities ordered roughly 20,000 people from about 60 villages to move to safer locations, set up relief camps, and issued downstream alerts.
  • NDRF and local teams conducted rescues and damage checks, evacuating Arni University students and noting impacts to about 65 roads and 92 drinking-water schemes.
