Record-Breaking Single-Day Migrant Encounters at U.S.-Mexico Border

Over 12,000 encounters reported in one day amid escalating crisis, as Washington struggles to agree on solutions.

  • U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) sources have reported a record-breaking number of over 12,000 migrant encounters at the U.S.-Mexico border in a single day, including over 10,200 Border Patrol apprehensions of illegal immigrants.
  • Several major Border Patrol sectors are reportedly running heavily over capacity, with the agency currently having over 22,000 migrants in custody.
  • In fiscal year 2023, CBP encountered more than 2.47 million illegal immigrants, marking an increase from the roughly 2.38 million recorded in 2022 and 1.73 million in 2021.
  • The Tucson Sector in Arizona and the Del Rio Sector in Texas have been particularly hard hit, with the former seeing nearly 3,000 encounters in a single day and the latter recording over 3,300 illegal crossings.
  • Despite the escalating crisis, Washington struggles to agree on solutions, with Republicans demanding restrictions on asylum and parole, and Democrats insisting on policy changes accompanied by an amnesty for illegal immigrants already in the U.S.
