Overview

  • Nine men recaptured after the May 16 escape pleaded not guilty to simple escape charges that carry two to five years in addition to their existing sentences.
  • Jail plumber Sterling Williams along with four alleged accomplices pleaded not guilty to accusations that they turned off water and provided other aid to facilitate the breakout.
  • Prosecutors have charged at least 16 people, many of them family members, for supplying transport, shelter, cash or other support to the escapees.
  • Authorities are relying on surveillance video showing detainees breaching a cell wall, scaling a barbed-wire fence and sprinting across Interstate 10 to underpin their cases.
  • Derrick Groves remains the sole fugitive from one of the largest U.S. jail breaks in recent history as law enforcement continues the manhunt.
