Overview

  • A petition submitted on May 22 yielded 10,523 valid signatures, exceeding the 9,911 required to trigger a special recall election.
  • Only registered voters in District 4—which includes the Sunset, Outer Sunset and Parkside neighborhoods—will decide Engardio’s fate.
  • The recall was launched in response to Engardio’s support for Proposition K, which turned a two-mile stretch of the coastal highway into a public park.
  • Many westside residents report longer commutes, increased traffic congestion and concerns over pedestrian safety since the highway closure.
  • Engardio has defended the park for its role in coastal dune restoration and recreation and has raised over $407,000 to fight the recall.
