The Three Brotherhood Alliance, an alliance of three rebel groups in Myanmar, has launched a successful offensive against the ruling military junta, the Tatmadaw, capturing key towns and military positions in the northern Shan State.
The offensive, named 'Operation 1027', has resulted in the capture of at least seven towns and 125 Tatmadaw positions in two weeks, including crucial trading posts on Myanmar's border with China.
The success of the offensive has been described as a 'watershed' moment in the conflict, potentially capable of toppling the junta, which is already facing deep economic and political crises.
The offensive has revitalized the opposition, aligning several groups and giving hope to other groups throughout Myanmar. The resistance is now turning its attention to Myanmar's Sagaing Region, which borders India.
In response to the offensive, the junta has conducted heavy air and artillery strikes. The junta-appointed president, Myint Swe, warned that Myanmar would be 'split into various parts' if the government did not effectively manage the incidents happening in the border region.
