Nelson Thomas, a reality star best known for his participation in MTV shows 'The Challenge' and 'Are You the One?', was charged with a misdemeanor DWI on September 28, following a nearly fatal car crash he survived back in March. He was arrested and released after posting a $5,000 bond.
The accident left Thomas with a severe ankle injury that has not properly healed despite several surgeries. The lack of healing has led to possibilities of amputation or an ankle fusion surgery.
Thomas' blood alcohol level at the time of the accident was 0.178. This is more than double the legal limit of 0.08, causing his charge to increase to a Class A misdemeanor.
In an attempt to save his ankle, Thomas revealed plans on seeking second opinions and alternative treatments. He has expressed a particular interest in stem cell therapy and planned a trip to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico for this purpose.
Thomas' fans and fellow reality TV stars rallied behind him offering support and financial aid. A GoFundMe account dedicated to helping with his medical bills and recovery treatments has raised nearly $60,000.
