Overview
- The REAL ID Act, passed in 2005 following 9/11 Commission recommendations, will now be enforced after years of delays.
- Travelers without a REAL ID can use TSA-approved alternatives such as passports, Enhanced Driver's Licenses, or tribal IDs to board flights.
- DMVs across the U.S. have experienced long lines and appointment shortages as travelers rush to meet the deadline.
- Children under 18 are exempt from the REAL ID requirement for domestic air travel but must be accompanied by an adult with compliant identification.
- States will continue issuing REAL IDs after May 7, so those unable to meet the deadline can still apply for future travel needs.
