Reading FC Receives Suspended Penalty, Owner Charged with Misconduct

The English Football League imposes sanctions following pitch invasion and financial breaches; abandoned match against Port Vale to be replayed.

  • Reading Football Club has been handed a suspended three-point penalty by the English Football League (EFL) due to a pitch invasion by their fans which caused their League One fixture against Port Vale to be abandoned.
  • The club's owner, Dai Yongge, has been charged with misconduct and bringing Reading and the EFL into disrepute due to repeated financial breaches, including failing to deposit funds in a designated bank account for the past four months.
  • The suspended penalty will be activated if Reading's fans cause another fixture to be abandoned during this season or the next.
  • The match against Port Vale, which was abandoned due to the pitch invasion, will be replayed in full on February 20.
  • Reading has been docked points in each of the last three seasons by the EFL, with their six-point deduction in the 2022-23 campaign resulting in relegation to League One for the first time since 2002.
