REACH Medical Helicopter Crashes Onto Sacramento’s Highway 50, Leaving 3 Crew Members Critical

Newly released video shows drivers lifting the wreckage to free a trapped crew member.

Overview

  • The Airbus H130 air ambulance went down around 7:08 p.m. on Oct. 6 on eastbound Highway 50 near 59th Street minutes after departing UC Davis Medical Center.
  • The pilot, nurse and paramedic were transported to area hospitals in critical condition, with no patient aboard and no injuries reported to motorists.
  • Sacramento Fire officials say roughly 15 bystanders helped a first-arriving captain raise part of the overturned helicopter to extricate a crew member.
  • The FAA and NTSB, working with the California Highway Patrol, have opened an investigation, and no cause has been determined.
  • Eastbound lanes were closed for hours for rescue and cleanup and have since reopened, and family identified nurse Susan “Suzie” Smith as among the injured.
