RCS Breaks for Some Galaxy Users After Smart Switch Transfers

Corrupted app cache copied by Smart Switch is breaking RCS for many Galaxy users.

Overview

  • Google confirmed on August 19, 2026 that it is aware of reports that RCS stops working after users move data to a new Galaxy phone with Samsung Smart Switch.
  • Affected phones commonly show error code 3100 and lose the ability to connect to RCS servers when enabling or sending modern carrier messages.
  • Google says the problem often stems from corrupted cache files transferred during Smart Switch and it recommends updating Google Messages, turning RCS off, clearing Carrier Services data, restarting, and then re-enabling RCS.
  • That sequence does not fix every case and some users report they only restored RCS after factory resetting their phones; Google also warns similar outages after carrier changes may instead result from incomplete number porting.
  • The issue matters because Samsung shut down its U.S. Messages app and pushed users to Google Messages, so more Galaxy owners are migrating data and risk losing RCS features like typing indicators and richer media until provisioning is repaired.
