RCMP End Ground Search for Missing Alberta Boy After 11 Days

The investigation now turns to public tips.

Overview

  • Cpl. Gina Slaney said that if six-year-old Darius Macdougall remains in the search area, police believe he is no longer alive.
  • The Crowsnest Pass area has been reopened after teams repeatedly searched nearly 22 square kilometres over more than 11,000 hours.
  • More than 400 search-and-rescue volunteers and 60 RCMP tactical members used helicopters, fixed-wing aircraft, drones, dogs, horses and underwater units with no confirmed findings.
  • RCMP say there is no indication of foul play and they continue to assess tips and leads, with family liaison officers keeping relatives informed.
  • Search methods were tailored to the child’s autism and to very low survivability estimates, and officials said cadaver dogs were not deployed before demobilization.
