RCMP Deploy Cadaver Dogs in Nova Scotia Search for Missing Siblings

Specialist teams from British Columbia will focus on high‑probability areas identified in the months‑long probe.

Overview

  • Police confirmed searches will proceed but are withholding dates, times and locations in consideration of the investigation and officer safety.
  • This is the first time RCMP human‑remains detection teams have been used in the case, after earlier operations relied on dogs trained to track human scent.
  • Handlers Sgt. Dave Whalen with Kitt and Insp. Luke Rettie with Narc are being brought in, with dogs capable of detecting decomposed remains in soil, water and burned terrain.
  • RCMP spokesperson Cindy Bayers said there is nothing definitive to show the children are deceased, despite extensive searches that have not located them.
  • Investigators report 8,060 video files reviewed, 819 tips received, 80 interviews conducted and 1,071 tasks assigned, noting limited Atlantic resources delayed access to a cadaver‑dog team.
