Overview
- The value of Rs 2,000 notes in circulation has fallen from Rs 3.56 lakh crore on May 19, 2023 to Rs 5,817 crore by October 31, 2025.
- The RBI reports that 98.37% of the Rs 2,000 banknotes extant on May 19, 2023 have been returned.
- Exchange facilities for the denomination have been available at 19 RBI issue offices since May 19, 2023.
- From October 9, 2023, RBI issue offices began accepting deposits of Rs 2,000 notes for credit to bank accounts.
- The initial all-bank-branch return window closed on October 7, 2023, and returns now proceed through RBI issue offices or by sending notes via India Post for account credit.
