Overview
- The Reserve Bank of India reported that about 98.47–98.5% of the ₹2,000 notes issued before the May 19, 2023 withdrawal have been returned, leaving ₹5,451 crore in circulation as of April 30, 2026.
- The ₹2,000 note remains legal tender with no expiry, and holders can still exchange or deposit notes at any of the 19 RBI Issue Offices or send them via India Post for credit to their bank account.
- Commercial banks stopped accepting deposits and exchanges of ₹2,000 notes on October 7, 2023, narrowing practical return routes to the RBI offices and the postal facility.
- The limited redemption channels can create inconvenience for people in smaller towns and rural areas because they must travel to an RBI office or use a slower postal process to recover value from the notes.
- Authorities and analysts portray the phase-out as routine currency management rather than a crisis, and the move fits a broader shift toward digital payment systems such as UPI that have reduced demand for high-value cash.
