RBI Names Suman Ray Executive Director
The appointment places a long-serving RBI official in charge of deposit insurance and bank premises to preserve continuity in core operational functions.
Overview
- Suman Ray was appointed Executive Director with effect from September 1, 2026, and will look after the Department of Deposit Insurance & Credit Guarantee Corporation and the Premises Department.
- Before his promotion Ray served as the Reserve Bank’s Regional Director for Maharashtra and has more than three decades of experience across currency management, payments, financial inclusion, consumer protection, and human resources.
- The RBI announced the appointment in a press release that was carried by national agencies and outlets, following a recent sequence of internal ED-level promotions at the central bank.
- This role gives Ray operational oversight of the Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation, the unit that protects small depositors by insuring bank deposits, and responsibility for the central bank’s premises management.
- The appointment follows earlier RBI ED promotions this year, including Ravi Shankar in July and Monisha Chakraborty in August, reflecting a routine rotation to staff technical departments with senior career officials.
