RBI Names Indranil Bhattacharyya as Ex-Officio MPC Member Ahead of September Policy Review

Overview

  • RBI’s Central Board approved the appointment at its 618th meeting in Lucknow chaired by Governor Sanjay Malhotra.
  • Bhattacharyya, the Executive Director heading the Monetary Policy Department, succeeds Rajiv Ranjan, who will retire at the end of September after serving on the MPC since May 2022.
  • He will join the six-member committee for the upcoming policy meeting slated for September 29 to October 1.
  • The board also reviewed global and domestic economic conditions, including geopolitical and financial market developments and related challenges.
  • With nearly three decades in central banking, Bhattacharyya previously led DEPR and served as an economic expert at the Qatar Central Bank from 2009 to 2014.
