Overview
- Tampa Bay sent veteran catcher Danny Jansen and cash to the Brewers on July 28 in exchange for infield prospect Jadher Areinamo.
- Jansen, an Appleton, Wisconsin, native, is slated to back up All-Star William Contreras, who has been playing through a fractured finger for Milwaukee’s NL Central-leading club.
- In a separate deal the same day, the Rays acquired catcher Nick Fortes from the Miami Marlins in exchange for minor-league outfielder Matthew Etzel.
- Fortes joins Tampa Bay under three years of arbitration control at a lower salary and will split duties with Matt Thaiss to bolster defensive consistency behind the plate.
- Areinamo hit .297 with 11 homers and 51 RBIs in 94 games for High-A Wisconsin and adds infield versatility at second, third and shortstop to the Rays’ prospect pipeline.
